Suspension Repair

Your vehicle's suspension system protects you from bouncing up and down due to poor road conditions and road bumps. More importantly, it affects your ability to drive, and that can mean the difference between life and death. That is why we specialize in suspension repairs and replacements in our workshop. Our technicians are some of the bests in the business.

Suspension Basics

The suspension system is located mainly in the undercarriage of your car, around where your wheels connect to the rest of the vehicle. A modern car’s suspension is made up of springs, clamps, wishbones, dampers, and links, all of which work together to adjust to road conditions or driving surfaces all in order to smooth out the ride. There’s no single default type of suspension for all cars, or even for a majority of vehicles. Over the years, a number of different types of suspension systems have been created and implemented. Vehicle suspension types can be broken out into two broad categories, and then into several subcategories within those two.

Dependent Suspension

In a fully dependent suspension system, each wheel on each side of the axle is rigidly connected to the other. This means that anything that affects one of the wheels will potentially and even likely affect the other. It was the first type of suspension and the main advantage of dependent suspension is its load capacity. Today, the only place you'll find dependent suspension is on some buses, large trucks, or other commercial vehicles. Cars and passenger trucks almost all have independent suspensions of various kinds.

Types of Suspension

The best type of suspension for a car or passenger truck is an independent suspension. Thanks to the independent suspension, each wheel of the car is independently connected to the rest of the vehicle. Most passenger cars have independent front suspension, and many today have independent rear suspension as well.

Airbag suspension, also known as air suspension, uses an air pump or compressor powered by electricity or the car’s engine to inflate rubber bellows (airbags) on each wheel. Air suspension replaces the springs in the suspension system.

Traditionally, air suspension was used mostly for trucks and buses, but in recent years, automobile companies including Cadillac, Mercedes-Benz, Ford, and many others have begun using airbag suspension for many of their vehicles.

The disadvantage of independent suspensions is that they are expensive to manufacture and take up a lot of space. However, dependent suspensions offer poor handling and a number of safety risks. A compromise between the two is the semi-independent suspension.

The semi-independent suspension connects the two tires on each side of the axle directly, but this link has a mechanism that offers some yield and flexibility for increased control and safety. This type of suspension is commonly known as a pivot beam or torsion beam. Many vehicles use pivoting suspension mainly for the rear wheels.

Double wishbone suspension uses a pair of wishbone-shaped arms to connect the wheel to the vehicle body and offers control along two axles. In a sense, the double wishbone suspension is similar to a MacPherson strut with an additional connection point.

A double wishbone suspension system provides an added level of control and shock absorption and is often used in sports cars and other vehicles where special methods must be devised to achieve a smooth and comfortable ride.

Suspension Repair and Maintenance

If you've ever driven or ridden in an older vehicle with a basic suspension system, hopefully you realize how much your newer car's suspension makes today's ride smooth and comfortable. Your vehicle's suspension dampens all the bumps and jolts you experience while driving, keeping your car firmly and stably under control at all times. The suspension system is quite complicated, consisting of a number of interconnected and interdependent components. Different vehicles are manufactured with different types of suspension systems, each offering pluses and minuses, which in turn can affect the way the vehicle handles and rides.
